Media effects model? /

- The model (sometimes referred to as a theory) concerns how media can affect society / individuals and vice versa

- There are very negative implications of this model but you will also learn some counter arguments

First blood - Rambo 1 movie clip

  • Cartoonish (comparable to the film roadrunner)
  • Unrealistic level of violence
  • Desensitised
  • Constant flow of bullets from machine gun
  • Comedia diegetic sound from gun (high pitched and old fashion
  • age of this 40 year old film shows

Media effects model suggests that audiences are passive and easily influenced by the media they consume

How far do you agree or disagree with this statement?

- Context

Notable examples:
- The hungerford massacre - Michael robert ryan was potentially inspired by rambo when he shot sixteen people and himself
- Jamie bulger
- Colombine massacre in 1999
- Child's play 3 / chucky
-

- Rage quitting

Are video games really making us more violent?
- Pbs video

Difference between violence and agression

Anderson Breikiv trained for school shooting murder of 70 children by playing Call Of Duty
Adam Lanza is a similar story

List for and against this theory debate :
- Humans are much more psychologically complex than just passive learners, the human brain is much more complex than the brain of eg. a dog who learns from their owner and follows
- Video games may contribute to violence yes, but they shouldn't be the BLAME for violence. There should be more funding for mental health services and a fairer more humanised criminal justice system.
- Influenced by the hero who may also kill people
- New exposure to violence
- Influences vulnerable, or young minds still developing an ethical compass
