TV Ownership

Why we have to pay for a tv licence - essentially a tax - Funds the bbc (which is a public service broadcaster)

ITV VS BBC

- BBC is a PSB whereas ITV is a moneymaking business (commercial) - Adverts on ITV, BBC profit is through UK tv licence - BBC provides education and of course, entertainment

- BBC cannot advertise products (product placement) eg. marmite is known as 'yeast extract' and branding is removed. Public service broadcasting - Generally transmit programming that aims to improve society by informing viewers - Also strive to entertain viewers, but this is less of a priority.

PSB golden rules - Reflects the diversity of the UK.

  • Programmes must inform viewers
  • programs must be distinctive (not copying a format successful in the US)
BBC remit

  • Inform, educate, entertain (in order)
  • - To reflect the uk, its culture and the world BBC uses vertical and horizontal integration
  • - Vertical: A media company has the ability to control the production (pre, prod, post), distribution and exchange (consumption/ exhibition) of a product
  • - Horizontal: A media company has a number of subsidary companies that are used to support the production of a product - Tiny companies are neither e.g.. very small production company - very rare for a company to be both (only massive conglomerates/ companies.
  • *PICTURE OF GRAPH*  BBC HAS ALL OF THIS, UNLIKE LOTS OF SMALLER COMPANIES. BECAUSE BBC IS SO BIG

Case study: doctor who bbc one

  •  - doctor who .com
  • - clips are good for social media
  • - merch
  • - modern dr who logo different to past logos
  • - Repeated use of character pics for advertisement, boarders of websites etc...
  • - character pages
  • Synergy - Companies that are both horizontal and vertical integration are able to create synergy - creating a very recognisable brand, production and marketing becomes low cost and very efficient - eg. disney, bbc
  • - Doctor who can be advertised across a range of different media via horizontal integration. *picture of graph* -this is how dr who fits into the case study -advertisement on their website - cheaper - no extra marketing payments
